PHOTO RETAKE DAY

Good afternoon Room 24 Families,

I wanted to let all families know that

October 30 is Photo Retake Day!

I realize that our class photos were not sent home this afternoon and apologize for the inconvenience. We got caught up in our afternoon learning and they were not picked up from the office on time to be sent home - I am so sorry about this!

I will ensure that all photos are sent home tomorrow afternoon!

Thank you for your understanding,
Taylor Gierl

October 15 - 18

Artist in Residence!

We are so excited to have worked with Mrs. F this week during our Artist in Residence! Next week, we will have an opportunity to complete our sessions and finalize our projects. Students had a close look at different textiles and patterns from around the world and learned about the Carpet Industry in India. Ask your student about the process of making carpets!

In our Artist in Residence, they are working on designing a carpet using canvas, acrylic paint, and fabrics. They looked specifically at planning designs, weaving, and 'weft and warp' - ask your student what those words mean!

Guest Speaker

We were thrilled to welcome Dino Petrakos - an Petroleum Geologist - into our learning community! With fascinating artifacts and samples, a slideshow and a wealth of knowledge, students learned about rocks, earthquakes, tectonic plates, mountain ranges and the creation of fossil fuels! Thank you SO much, Dino for joining us today!

Halloween Parade

Halloween 2019

Royal Oak is excited to invite students to wear their Halloween costumes on October 31st. Please have students come dressed in their costume in the morning
(PM Kindergarten & EDC, please come ready in the afternoon!).

Please have your child practice getting in and out of their costume so they can independently dress for washroom breaks.
We ask that costumes do not include: masks, weapons, accessories, or blood/gore.

Regular learning activities will continue throughout the day. Students will get the opportunity to share their costumes with each other by participating in a parade in the halls at 9:30 am. This year, parents are invited to watch the parade in the gym. Please arrive a few minutes early to find a seat. PM Kindergarten students are also invited to watch the parade in the morning, and will have their own parade in their classrooms in the afternoon. In keeping with learning about healthy eating, please do not send any special treats or snacks to share.

We look forward to seeing all of your costumes!

Literacy:

This term we will be using the Literacy CAFE and other strategies to develop our comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expand our vocabulary. We will also practice making text-to-text connections, text-to-world connections and text-to-self connections.

We began learning the parts of sentences and practiced applying them in our own writing! We will continue exploring nouns, verbs, adjectives as well as the different types of sentences next week!

Image result for parts of a sentence anchor chart .

This week in literacy students wrote about Orange shirt Day and the importance of recognizing it. We read the book "When I Was Eight" and then students reflected with the guiding questions;
What is Orange Shirt Day? and What does it mean to me?

Math:
Reading a Math Word Problem!

Rapunzel: a Math Fairytale :)
Students read 'Rapunzel' and had to solve a variety of problems that could be solved through math. Working in groups, students worked to figure out how much farther the Prince would have to climb if the tower is 564"tall and he had stopped at 43".

We will be working towards a CUBES (circle, underline, box, evaluate and draw, solve and check) strategy that allows students to access a pneumonic device to approach word problems.

Social Studies:

We have began exploring India through research on the computers, mapping and whole group discussions! Students have worked collaboratively to brainstorm what they already know about India, what they wonder about India, and have begun using resources to answer those questions and curiosities! We are lucky to have experts in our classrooms who can bring in special artifacts and knowledge from their families to share with us. Thank you, Diya for bringing beautiful traditional clothing for us to admire! We will continue exploring India through the lens of Environmental Geologists!

Science:
Students have been finishing up their identification of one rock within the rock cycle. This was a refresher/introduction for students on how to look scientifically at a rock in a 'lab' setting. First modeled in class, students were then challenged to improve their work by following the rubric/checklist below.
