Grade 3 Celebration of Learning
Thursday, March 5th, 6-7pm (please stay tuned for an information sheet coming home soon!)

Needed:
Please send recycled cardboard, tape, duct tape for our upcoming house-building unit! All shapes and sizes welcome :)

Math:
This week we continued to examine shapes by looking at specific attributes and descriptors of shapes. Students examined faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes. They applied this knowledge when they wrote shape descriptions for Ms. Gierl to solve! Ask your student what shape(s) they drew & if Ms. Gierl was able to solve it or not!

Writing:
Students completed their good copies of their stories this week! It has been a very intentional process of generating creative and imaginative ideas along with editing. We can't wait to share them with you at our Celebration of Learning March 5th.

Science:

We continued to read the book, "Builder Brothers: Big Plans" as a way to examine the design thinking process. Most notably the idea of being "Empathetic" to a situation that makes you want to understand what the "Problem" is. From there we "Ideate" and come up with creative, inventive and out-of-the-box ideas to potentially solve the problem. "Prototype and Test" encourages students to build based on their ideas and then test to see if it actually solves the problem! One of the most important attributes of Design Thinking is the notion that this is a continuous process, and that most problems aren't solved the first time around.

Thank you to Ms. Devereux for inviting your friend from Victoria, B.C to share her wonderful and SUSTAINABLE house with us via Skype. We were amazed to learn about her south facing windows, her solar panel energy, electric car, natural water system and more. Ask your child about one thing they learned from Erika!

Enjoy your long weekend! See you all next Tuesday.
