Hello Room 24 Families!
We have had a wonderful (and busy) first full week in Grade 3. I have been so happy and excited to get to know each and every one of the kiddos our in classroom. I know our year in Grade 3 will be full of kindness, enthusiasm, and LOTS of learning!
Along with getting to know our new space, the routines and procedures of our classroom, and learning about one another - we have begun some very exciting work!
Math
Students worked on reviewing their knowledge from Grade 2 in order to build a solid foundation for math in Grade 3. They worked together to build, pull apart, and rebuild numbers ranging from 0-1000 using Friendly Numbers, Explosion Math and Open Number Lines. If you'd like to continue practicing at home - ask your student about Number Bonds and Friendly Numbers or Adding on open number lines!
Literacy
Students have began exploring Poetry - looking specifically at the Elements of Poetry. Students were introduced to elements such as alliteration, simile, imagery, onomatopoeia, and rhyming - challenge them to give you an example of one of the elements. Students read and analyzed a variety of poems while looking at each element in order to fully understand it. They were then challenged to apply that element in their own piece of poetry! We will continue this work next week.
Inquiry
During inquiry, students began their work as Geologists. We began our work by sorting and categorizing our name rocks - students worked together to create criteria in order to group rocks together. Some examples: shape, size, weight. Next, we practiced our skill of sketching rocks as students followed a step by step instructional video! See below the incredibly detailed pieces of art that they created! When you visit us for conferences - you will get to see our final art pieces.
Buddies!
Sunday, September 15th is International Dot Day! We worked together with our Grade 1 Buddies to create a wonderful art piece to show families during our conferences. Ask your student about "The Dot" - What is the message? What did you learn from Vashti in The Dot?
