Place Value
Definition
In the base ten number system, each place has ten times the value of the place to its right.

Example
In the number 1329:
  • the one is in the thousands position
  • the three is in the hundreds position
  • the two is in the tens position
  • the nine is in the ones position.

More on Place Value
Large whole numbers are arranged in groups of threes called periods. Each period has a hundred(s), ten(s) and one(s) position.
See the number 123 456 789 below as an example. The 8 is in the tens position, the 5 is in the ten-thousands position.

Choir Field Trip

Christmas Carols at YMCA on Dec 17

The Royal Oak School Grade Three Winter Choir is pleased to invite you to the Shane Homes YMCA
in Rocky Ridge to hear us sing some Christmas Carols!

We will be performing on Tuesday, December 17th at 10:30am, just inside the front doors.

These dedicated Grade Three students have been practicing hard for a month and are very excited to share
their seasonal music with our community!  People of all ages will enjoy old classics like Rudolf and Frosty,
as well as a few contemporary pieces.

Please consider joining us for some holiday magic and celebrate the joy of the season with our
students at the Y!

December 2 - 6

Writing:

Students have continued their exploration of book genres - looking specifically at Fairytales, the elements of Fairytales, and the overall recipe for them! Ask your student what are some key features of the genre of Fairytales :)

Room 24 did a compare and contrast of Cinderella, Cindy-Ellen and Ponyella in order to identify the similarities and differences between the classic and the twisted stories!

Math:

Students worked hard to identify the rules of place value for numbers up to 1000 - and beyond for an extra challenge! They furthered their number sense by writing the numbers in standard form, word form, expanded form and by using base 10 model.

Ask your student to show you these four representations with a 4-digit number!!

We practiced creating Arrays for our multiplication strategy! Students played a card game to create a variety of arrays - whoever filled up the sheet first, won! It was an exciting way to practice the repeated addition/multiplying skill.

Field Trip: We had so much fun at the Alberta Theatre Project Field Trip on Thursday! The students were very impressed with the lighting, props, costumes and cast - it was truly an amazing experience! Thank you, Lia & Family for sending this amazing book for us to read before we went to the play!

Thanks again to our parent volunteers :)

Upcoming Dates:
  • December 17th: Chior Field Trip
  • December 19th: Caroling & Class Holiday Party
    • Our class will be playing board games and watching a movie together to celebrate the end of 2019! Please feel free to send nut-free snacks :)
  • December 20 - January 5th: Holiday Break!
  • January 6th: Classes Resume

Note from Mr. Hamby:
